National Volunteer Week takes place April 15 through April 21 and encourages Americans to observe this week by volunteering in service projects across the country and pledging to make service a part of their daily lives. Several volunteer groups, including Waukegan-based WMS Industries Inc., Abbott and local youth groups will be volunteering in throughout Lake County as part of National Volunteer Week. United Way of Lake County connected them with local volunteer opportunities and is proud to offer volunteer opportunities for individuals, small groups and corporate teams. UWLC has provided several other groups with various volunteer projects throughout this week as well. Shop at Grand Appliance and Support UWLC!

Local retailer Grand Appliance and TV has partnered with United Way of Lake County to raise funds for United Way of Lake County with a special savings event. The public is invited to shop at the Grand Appliance and TV locations in Libertyville (240 Peterson Road, 847-549-9807) or Waukegan (2915 Grand Avenue, 847- 336-4725) on April 24th, 2012 from 3-8pm and 10% of the night’s profit will be donated to United Way of Lake County’s Reading Success Program, which builds literacy skills to ensure all students are able to read at grade level by the end of 3rd grade. On April 24th, Grand Appliance and TV will offer exclusive event pricing on appliances, electronics and bedding and will also have several giveaways, including a 32” LCD HDTV, cookware set, Samsung blu ray layer, Miele upright vacuum and Chicago Bears grill. Volunteer at LIVE UNITED Saturdays!

UWLC is hosting monthly volunteer opportunities that are open to the public every month. Join us for our Annual Community Celebration!

UWLC is joining with members of the community in celebrating many outstanding achievements reached throughout the year at an Annual Celebration. This event is from 5:30 to 7:30 p.m., on Tuesday, May 15, 2012 and takes place at Urban Edge Gallery at 220 Clayton Street in Waukegan. The event will recognize the volunteers that built a universally-accessible playground with the help of the Chicago Bears at Clearview Elementary School in Waukegan, which received national attention and a Make A Difference Day Award. Tickets for the annual celebration are $25 per person or $250 for a table of 10. Tickets include appetizers and beer/wine. KeyLime Cove Community Days are Back!

It's back! Once again, UWLC is partnering with KeyLime Cove to offer day passes to the Lost Paradise Waterpark for just $25 per person per day starting April 16 through June 8, 2012. Proceeds of the Community Days promotion benefit United Way of Lake County and the Gurnee Police and Fire Departments. Tickets are available online through United Way of Lake County's website at www.liveunitedlakecounty.org/keylimecove, at KeyLime Cove's front desk during normal business hours and at participating First Midwest Bank, BMO Harris and Libertyville Bank & Trust locations. Passes are valid any day of the week during normal waterpark hours of 10 AM - 8 PM, excluding Memorial Day weekend (May 25-28). Tickets are subject to daily occupancy restrictions.

Get Ready for Page it Forward 2012!

We are getting ready to launch Page it Forward: Lake County’s Biggest Book Drive this summer! Last year, we collected over 154,000 books for low-income children in Lake County. This year, we aim to collect 200,000 books! Want to be a part of this movement?! We need volunteers! We are looking for individuals or groups that would be willing to assist in various ways, including starting a book drive in your community, decorating collection bins, distributing flyers, managing a collection site, sorting/counting books and staffing community events.
