The Issue:
Currently:
- 1000 Lake County High School Students drop out of school a year
- 43% of Waukegan students with limited English abilities graduate
- 41% of Latino, African American and low income Waukegan high school students miss more than 10% of the
school days during a semester.
Solutions:
Computer Learn & Earn: Computer training for parents, including how to navigate the school’s online student attendance & academic tracking system. Parents who participate in the entire training series will earn a computer for their home.
Family-Focused High School Orientation: Prepare at-risk families for high school by educating families about the value of attendance and graduation requirements and by guiding parents on how to support teens in high school.
Waukegan High School Career Expo: Provides students with over 100 guest speakers in a wide variety of careers/occupations. United Way helps to establish this expo and recruits volunteers to speak.
Science Speakers: Provides students with unique interactive learning opportunities designed to spark their interests, reveal the real-world relevance of their schoolwork and engage them in learning by bringing science to life!

Outcomes:
Stay in School is our newest program and many initiatives are still in the planning stages. A “Family Engagement for School Success” planning grant enabled us to study the barriers that prevent students from succeeding in high school in great depth. Currently, United Way is working with Waukegan High School to develop and strengthen programs that will overcome these barriers.
The Family Engagement for High School Success Toolkit: Planning and implementing an initiative to support the pathway to grauduation for at-risk students (United Way Worldwide, Harvard Family Research Project)
Since the Stay in School Initiatives are still in their infancy, United Way of Lake County is still in the process of planning and executing programming.
Computer Learn and Earn Initiative:
The Computer Learn and Earn will be measured by a self evaluation of increased knowledge and increased computer hits for those families on the Infinite Campus website. To date, United Way of Lake County 116 refurbished home computers were distributed to parents of Waukegan High School students through our Computer Learn and Earn Initiative.
