The Issue:
In 2011, United Way conducted an assessment of incoming kindergarteners’ early learning skills in North Chicago. We found:
- Almost 50% of children know less than half the letters of the alphabet.
- 45% of children could not write their name
- 62% of children had little knowledge of books

Initiatives:
Home Visiting: Visit at-risk moms at home to teach skills, ensure that children are immunized in time to begin school, and monitor the healthy development of families
Early Learning Club: Instructs parents on how to encourage their children’s education by being their child’s first teacher
Building Blocks II (Quality Childcare): Partnership with Illinois Action for Children to build our community’s capacity to engage the most at-risk children in high-quality early learning environments
Book Distribution
Tools:
Kindergarten Readiness Calendar: 50,000 learning calendars and workbooks in English and Spanish distributed in the county each year
Early Learning Trails: Publicly accessible outdoor learning games at schools and parks focused on elementary level skills
Early Learning Tips: Series of weekly learning tips for parents. Provided in English and Spanish through community partners in regular communications
Parent Page: Provides a list of websites, resources and apps to help your child continue learning.
Outcomes:
Results from Home Visiting Initiative:
- 100% of children recalled primary colors after the program
- 66% of children recognized letters of the alphabet after the program
- 100% of children immunized before entering school


We need to increase funding by $1 Million to expand this program to reach more families!
