Thank You for Making the Holidays Brighter!

Looking for holiday volunteer opportunities? View our Holiday Opportunities Guide!

Holidays are spent with family and friends, sharing gifts and giving thanks. However, for many families in Lake County, their most needed holiday wishes are the basics— warm clothing for the winter, money for a holiday meal, books for school, and toys and learning activities for their children. Our hearts are full from the generosity and kind spirit from everyone in the community during the holiday season.

Here is how some of our partners helped spread the holiday cheer:

Chicago Bear’s Jermon Bushrod hosts holiday shopping event:

Jermon Bushrod, offensive tackle for the Chicago Bears, hosted his annual holiday shopping spree in Vernon Hills. Working with United Way of Lake County, a group of students from McCall Elementary in Waukegan enjoyed an evening of shopping at Sports Authority with many Chicago Bears players. The players, including Jermon Bushrod, Kyle Long, and Matt Slauson, helped students shop for gifts for their loved ones.

The students were then treated to a dinner at Portillo's where Bears players and their wives helped wrap the purchased gifts. Thank you Jermon for sponsoring such a special event for these students and allowing them to purchase holiday gifts for their families. To view photos from their shopping spree, click here.

Multiple Corporate Partners give back during the holiday season:

BMO Harris Call Center has been a great partner throughout the year. To ring in the holiday spirit, employees collected winter clothes for students at Cooke Magnet Elementary School in Waukegan. Teachers and faculty were overwhelmed and extremely thankful for the gifts that will put smiles on the faces of the students receiving coats, scarfs, hats and mittens, just in time for winter.

ITW/Paslode and Baxter employees spend a lot of time volunteering throughout the year. In December employees gave their  time volunteering at Catholic Charities, a UWLC funded partner. The Catholic Charities Christmas Gift Program provides gifts to needy families, children and seniors throughout Lake County by matching the needs of the disadvantaged with individual donors, churches, corporate donors, schools and other donors. In addition to volunteering, ITW/Paslode adopted 3 families from the Christmas Gift Program. Thank you ITW/Paslode for opening your hearts during the holiday season.

Women’s Leadership Council gives a HUG to Green Bay Early Childhood Center:

Women’s Leadership Council (WLC) members were the first to deliver more than 300 hundred children’s books to North Chicago’s Green Bay Early Childhood Center. Members also spent the morning reading  The Mitten to the pre-k students. After reading, WLC members gave each student a holiday gift bag with their own book and pair of mittens to take home. View all photos from the event here.

United Way of Lake County staff and board members make a mitten line:

During the month of December, United Way of Lake County staff and board members had fun collecting and hanging mittens on our mitten line in the Community Impact Department. Over 110 mittens were collected, plus some scarfs, hats and socks.  Everything was donated to Love INC of Lake County.  Love INC of Lake County mobilizes local churches to transform lives and communities in the Name of Christ.

A very big thank you to everyone who opened their hearts this holiday season. It takes everyone working together to create a brighter future for our children and our community.
