Staff Spotlight: Carolina Herrera
Welcome back to Familiar Faces Friday! This week we are excited to introduce Carolina Herrera, our Community Engagement Manager. Come learn more about her and her role at United Way of Lake County!
When did you start working at United Way of Lake County?
I joined United Way of Lake County in November of 2012.
What is your title and role?
I am the Community Engagement Manager. Through this role I work with our school partners and funded partners. I listen closely to their needs and share those wishes with our corporate partners and supporters. I blend both the needs and resources and turn them into fulfilling volunteer projects.
What made you want to be a part of this organization?
United Way of Lake County’s mission fit perfectly with my own personal values and interest in serving my community. Education changed the course of my life and here at United Way we believe that education changes everything!
Which of United Way’s programs do you connect to most and why?
I connect most with our efforts tied to our Stay in School area because I firmly believe that reaching students at the middle school and high school level truly has a long-lasting impact on their future.
Our work with the Young Men of Vision and Ladies of Distinction at Abbott Middle School has shown that exposing students to a wide range of career options and personal stories from successful professionals truly broadens their vision of what opportunities are available for their future.
What is your favorite part of your job here?
My favorite part is working alongside a passionate group of people. But I also enjoy collaborating with corporations and individuals who support and make an investment in the work that we are doing in the community.
When you are not at work, what kinds of things do you do with your time?
When I’m not at work you might find me walking or riding my bicycle on our Lake County Forest Preserves. I enjoy visiting our local trails with my family. Exposing my children to nature is important to me. My heart always explodes with joy when my four-year-old grabs his binoculars and asks to go out for a walk!
I’m also part of a Latina book club better known as Las Mariposas. We read books written by Latin@ authors.
