AbbVie Operations Employees Transform Greenbay Elementary in North Chicago
By Sarah Campos, Marketing Communications Associate
On July 14 – 18, AbbVie Operations, in partnership with United Way of Lake County (UWLC), renovated and converted Greenbay Elementary for UWLC’s community funded partner, YouthBuild of Lake County. The Operations team has been volunteering in Lake County for many years and were happy to combine their volunteerism efforts into the first-ever AbbVie Week of Possibilities event that spanned across Lake County and Worcester, MA.
More than 300 AbbVie Operations employees helped transform Greenbay Elementary into a working facility for YouthBuild Lake County, a non-profit organization that serves at-risk, low income young adults with the mission to help them complete their education and gain job training skills to build a hopeful future for themselves and their families. AbbVie volunteers participated in interior and exterior work on the facility including preparation work, painting, cleaning, and landscaping. AbbVie Construction Services updated the bathrooms, replaced ceiling tiles and drywall repair, and added shelving throughout the building. The AbbVie North Chicago Grounds Crew removed dead trees, weeded the grounds and planted 150 new perennials around the exterior.
“This is a worthy cause and a great way to show our support for the education and the youth of our surrounding community,” said Azita Saleki-Gerhardt, Ph.D., SVP and President, AbbVie Operations and United Way of Lake County Board Member. “Volunteering to renovate and support schools is an important tradition for us as Operations, and we were happy that our volunteerism helped inspire and support AbbVie’s inaugural Week of Possibilities.”
