Landing a job after college can be difficult. It’s important to gain experience and additional knowledge in your field before you graduate to help make the task of getting employed easier. The best way to do this is by working as an intern. Statistics have shown that college kids with career experience are more likely to land a job after they graduate than graduates with no experience.
The summer before my senior year, I thought it would be great experience to intern for the United Way of Lake County and it was. After three short months as a marketing intern, I learned a lot of information that will help land a job after I graduate.
Being a summer intern at United Way of Lake County has been an amazing experience. It was very rewarding knowing that what I was working on everyday in the office positively impacted the community. My favorite day this summer wasn’t in the office though; it was volunteering and being a part of Aon’s Global Service Day at Glenwood Elementary School in Waukegan. Seeing the children’s faces light up as a bus full of Aon employees showed up to their school was amazing. After laying down mulch, painting school zones and weeding the school’s garden, it put how much positive change that United Way is making throughout Lake County into perspective.
This summer was fun. I made connections, acquired useful knowledge, gained experience in my field, learned important advice from co-workers and most importantly made a positive impact in my community. What more can you ask for in an internship?
