Kindergarten Countdown Camp

Kindergarten Countdown Camp (KCC) is a free summer learning program for incoming kindergarten students who have little to no preschool experience.

Children who attend preschool are more likely to enter kindergarten socially and emotionally ready to succeed in school.

Taught by licensed teachers, Kindergarten Countdown Camp prepares students for a successful start in kindergarten. Students adjust to the classroom setting, practice following directions and rules and are able to practice key kindergarten skills such as recognizing shapes, letters, counting and writing their names.

Teachers report that children should be at least ‘in progress’ in key kindergarten readiness skills (i.e.: know their letters, numbers and be able to write their name) when starting school. This summer, KCC took place at North Elementary. At the beginning of KCC, 38% of students averaged ‘in progress’ in these skills. By the end of Kindergarten Countdown Camp, 76% of students were ‘in progress’ or better in skills needed to succeed in kindergarten.

Kindergarten Countdown Camp is made possible in partnership with the Waukegan Public School District and United Way of Lake County’s Women’s Leadership Council.
